The Robert M Ingraham Kiting Community Award is presented to:
Kitefliers, who, during their lifetime career in kiting, have exemplified outstanding volunteerism and service to the American Kitefliers Association, and who, in the true spirit of Robert Ingraham, have given unselfishly of their time to help the AKA and promote kiting in general.
Two people who personify the spirit of this award are Ronda Brewer and Lindsey WisdomJohnson. They have been featured players for my whole time in kiting. I met Ronda on my very first visit to a kite gathering, which happened to be WSIKF, in about 2000. That day she talked my son into participating in a Rok battle, and we were off and running headlong into this passion of kiting. She is a fearsome Rok battler, by the way.
We met Lindsey soon after, and began to learn about how much they give to kiting. They are instrumental in organizing the two Lincoln City kite festivals each year. They offer Kites for Kids workshops galore at kite events and festivals, not just at home, like Antelope Island, but in far off lands. Saudi Arabia and Italy come to mind. Knot Ronda comes by that nickname because she is a whizz at all things relating to kite knots, and is happy to teach you what you need to know. She’s also known as the Tyvek Queen because of the stellar kites (often battle Roks) she makes out of that tough stuff. She and Lindsey have both been instructors at numerous kitemakers retreats. Lindsey comes to the aid of fellow kite makers when they ask him to make templates for kites they are building. And he creates custom fittings with his 3D printer skills. They have also done several of the world maker faires, providing make and take kites in huge numbers.
These two have both served on the AKA Executive Committee. When there is a need, they step up. Best of all, they spread the joy of kiting far and wide. I am proud to submit their names for the Ingraham Kiting Community Award.
