1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Nic O’Neill and I live in Anacortes, WA with the love of my life Paul de Bakker. I have flown different kinds of kites over the years, but it didn’t become a real passion till I moved to Boulder, Colorado and went to Into the Wind. A year later I attended the South Padre Kite Festival, and was instantly hooked by the community. Ended up as a sponsored powerkiter with HQ Powerkites for a few years, which somehow lead me to a beach in Washington state where I met a man that would change my whole idea of what is possible with kites. Now I fly just about anything, but love flying indoor single lines. In the last year I have been helping out the AKA as a Director-At-Large, managing the social media side of the house, and as the acting National Kite Month Chairmen. I have also recently launched my own kitebuilding and kite flying business, and I am completely blown away by the resources, support, and people that have chosen to be a part of that journey.
2. Why did you join the AKA?
Honestly, I did it because the AKA was there at all of the events I was attending, and it seemed to make sense. I am glad I did, because it has really opened up the KiteWorld for me.
3. What is your favorite kite to fly?
My one of a kind Skate that was made specially for me.
4. Where is your favorite place to fly?
Hmmm… I do love a good beach, but I really just like flying.
5. If you could fly with anyone dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you fly?
I know it sounds cheezy, but I kind of get to do this all the time when flying a pairs Skate routine with Paul de Bakker. Otherwise, I would love to fly a kite with two guys who have come to be big mentors to me over the years: Bazzer Poulter and Ron Gibian.
6. Where is the next place someone can find you flying a kite?
Uhm, I have to check the calendar, but I think the Victoria International Kite Festival is the next place.
