One of the biggest parts of the AKA Annual Convention is the Kitebuilding Competition. Competitors come from around the country to show off their newest creation and find out who has the best flight, the best stitching, or the best art. But here are some things you might not know about the Kitebuilding competition.
- Competitors can enter as many kites as they want! But only one per category. Well, except for trains, arches and sky display!
- Kites are scored on 4 criteria: kite flight and flight handling, aesthetic visual flight appeal, craftsmanship, and structural kite design.
- There is a special category for the super tiny kites! Miniature kites are those with the longest dimension is no more than 12 inches!
- Not only can you win in your category, you can also win a whole slew of other ‘Best in Show’ Awards like the ‘Novice Kitemaker’ or ‘Best use of Traditional Materials’.
