Annual Convention

next convention

AKA’s 43rd National Convention is scheduled for October 10-15, 2022, in Ocean City, Maryland.  Come and enjoy the Convention that we have been waiting several years to hold.  It will be great to see everyone again!

So much has changed, so much is the same. While the pandemic is still a concern, it seems less threatening this year and there is a groundswell of excitement to get together again and fly our kites.

Our planning for the cancelled Conventions was largely driven by members asking for changes to the Convention format. Some requested specific changes but many simply said, “Let’s try something different.” One big change is that almost all our events will happen around the host hotel, The Princess Royale. Another big change is that the Kitemakers’ Committee and the Sport Kite Committee are offering lots of new ideas for us to try at this year’s Convention on an experimental basis.

Key Questions About The Convention:

Will there be a refund if the event is cancelled due to the coronavirus?
If the AKA cancels the Convention, all registration fees will be refunded 100%.  If individuals cancel their own registrations for any reason prior to August 11, 2022, their registration fees will be refunded 100%. From August 12-September 11, 2022, persons cancelling their registrations will receive a 50% refund. After September 11, 2022, there are no refunds for cancellations. (Please note that the AKA has no control over hotel reservations and/or refund policies.)

When is a final decision going to be made?
The AKA contract with the hotel allows us to cancel the event prior to August 15 for a minimal fee. In addition to health and safety issues, the decision will also be made based on how many people register. This year the early-bird registration deadline has been changed to August 1, 2022. Based on the number of paid registrants at that time, the Convention Committee will prepare a report for the Board of Directors’ meeting on August 2, 2022, and the Board will decide if the Convention will be held or cancelled. Email notice will then be sent to all registrants.

AKA’s Annual Convention is a five-to-six-day gathering of kite enthusiasts, artists, & competitors, traditionally held in late September or early October.

Our Convention is one of the top events of the year. Conventions rotate around the country and are held at suitable kite flying venues in Eastern, Central, and Western regions of the USA. Convention activities include large outdoor and indoor demonstrations, educational workshops, displays, auctions, a fly market, and national level competitions for kite making, sport kite flying, kite battles, and miniature kites, as well as three categories of People’s Choice awards.
