Throughout National Kite Month we like to highlight some of the great fliers and kite-makers in our community. Today we are featuring Lee Froebe!
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Len Froebe, Steinbach Manitoba Canada. I like to fly my kites and go “fishing for wind” at a local hill in Steinbach locally known as Abe’s Hill. …. “If you can fly kites in the very variable winds of Manitoba, you can fly kites anywhere!” Lol ;-). …… I first learned about the AKA from my uncle when I was 10 years old (1971). …… When I fly single line kites I use fishing rods. Everyone that sees me doing so thinks it is a great idea!
Why did you join the AKA? Community of Kite enthusiasts and promotion of a really neat hobby.
What is your favorite kite to fly? Humm, tough choice. So far, my pair of regular diamond sport kites with 50ft.+ tails!

If you could fly with anyone dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you fly? My very inspirational Uncle Doug Froebe. …… Sport Diamonds or Sport Parafoils.
What is your favorite event or kite festival? To bedetermined. Possibly the one in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada, the SaskPower Windscape Kite Festival
What is one thing you wish more people knew about kite flying? That it is much more economical than flying radio controlled airplanes! Lol 😉
What is the best color combination for a kite? Vibrant Yellow, Red, and Green. Happy rainbow colours that contrast the best against a big blue sky!
You have been elected ruler of the kite field for a day. What is your first decree? More kite events in Canada! Presently they are far and few between!
Who would you say is your greatest influence in the kite world and why? My Uncle Doug Froebe. He inspired me with his huge single line kites that he flew with a deep sea fishing rod.
